Ozone Depleting Substances
From 1 January 2010 the use and sale of HCFCs will be banned under EC Regulation no. 2037/2000. This binding regulation is the legislative instrument used by the European Union to phase-out ozone depleting substances.
HCFCs (most commonly in the form of R22) are used in a variety of refrigeration and air conditioning installations. Any business, therefore, that uses such installations will be affected by the ban, and should be taking preparatory measures to ensure compliance in time for the 2010 deadline.
At Burlington Engineering we are informing all of our clients of the situation and we intend to make specific recommendations for all of our maintained sites containing R22 equipment in the coming months. Each site will require an individual survey to make an assessment of the specific requirements regarding the issue of R22 and its replacement.
Register of BER Assessors for Non Domestic Buildings
We are glad to announce that Burlington Engineering have been added to the Register of BER Assessors for Non Domestic Buildings.
Under current legislation a BER certificate and advisory report is to be supplied by the owner to a prospective buyer or tenant when a building is constructed, sold or rented. The BER is intended to give prospective buyers and tenants information about the energy performance of buildings. The BER also gives builders/developers and vendors/landlords an incentive to upgrade the energy performance of the building by giving visible credit to superior standards.
The BER must be accompanied by an "Advisory Report" setting out recommendations for cost-effective improvements to the energy performance of the building. However there will be no legal obligation on vendors or prospective purchasers to carry out the recommended improvements.
The BER is an indicator of energy performance covering energy use for space heating and cooling, water heating, ventilation and lighting, calculated on the basis of standard operating patterns. It is accompanied by a CO2 emissions indicator.
Burlington Engineering are delighted to now be in a position to offer this additional service, either in buildings that we already maintain or otherwise.
Registered Gas Installer (RGII)
As a registered gas installer Burlington Engineering are pleased to announce that three of our Service Engineers have now completed the relevant training and are registered with RGII.
Since 26th June 2009 only those gas installers that have completed the registration process with RGII are entitled to issue Declaration of Conformance Certificates and it is an offence for installers to carry out work in the areas of domestic natural gas installation, repair, maintenance or servicing unless registered with the RGII.
Two more of our service engineers are currently being trained and we intend to continue with this up-skilling process going forward to ensure that we are up to speed with the latest developments in the industry.
